Facts and Figures  

St. Thomas More College (STM) is a Catholic liberal arts undergraduate college, federated with the University of Saskatchewan (UofS).

The College was founded in 1936 through the joint initiative of U of S President Walter Murray, Bishop Gerald Murray, and Father Henry Carr, Superior General of the Basilian Fathers.

Student Enrolment: Approximately 2,000 full and part time undergraduate students have registered as STM students for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Faculty: STM has 31 full-time tenure track faculty; 3 full-time term faculty; 42 sessional faculty. STM faculty, while employed by STM, also belong to the U of S faculty.

Courses: STM offers courses in the humanities (English, History, Languages and Linguistics, Philosophy, Religious and Culture) and the social sciences (Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Political Studies, Psychology, Sociology). STM also offers several unique courses in Catholic Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies

Community Service-Learning: The Les and Irene Dubé Community Service-Learning Program at STM (CSL) is a type of experiential learning which involves: 1) students being partnered with community based agencies to contribute meaningful volunteer service, and 2) students participating in reflection activities to help make the connections between their community experience and their university learning. Students at STM can participate in CSL alongside their classes, such as in the Service & Justice Project, or within some of the classes themselves.

Student Services:
Student Services is responsible for student recruitment and retention programs at the college. Student Services also supports student organizations such as the St. Thomas More Student's Union, Newman Centre, Knights of Columbus College Council #10580, Newman Players, Development & Peace, STM Newman Choir, Pre-Education Club, Pre-Law Club and In Medias Res. The department also manages Ogle Hall Residence. STM provides more than $150,000 in scholarships and bursaries each year.

Campus Ministry: A team of Campus Ministers provides spiritual support, faith programs and community building services to students, staff and faculty.

Shannon Library:
the STM library (Shannon Library) houses more than 50,000 volumes with subscriptions to more than 200 periodicals, magazines and newspapers. Staff includes a Library Director, Library Assistant, Library Technician, Archivist, and 14 student assistants.

Lectures & Events: Michael Keenan Memorial Lecture (fall), Mohyla Lecture Series (fall/winter), Friends of Sophia Lectures (throughout the year), Windows to the East Lecture Series (February); John Stack Symposium and Lecture in Ethics (normally in conjunction with the STM Lawyer's Guild Red Mass).

Research Centres: Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage (PCUH).

Alumni/ae and Development Office: The Director of External Relations oversees alumni/ae relations, public relations, and fundraising for the college.

Food Services: Choices at St. Thomas More operates year round in STM's cafeteria and offers catering for special events.

Facilities: The college building was constructed in 1956 with significant additions in 1964 and 1969. Major rennovations took place within the college from 2001-2005.

Governance: STM is governed by a 10-member Board of Governors. STM is owned by a Saskatchewan Corporation (1943) of 70 members representing its Catholic constituency: Saskatchewan dioceses, members-at-large, alumni/ae, Basilian Fathers, STM students, tenured faculty, and campus ministry. STM faculty has their own Faculty Union (1977).

Administration: The President, Dean, and CFO, in consultation with the Administrative Committee, oversee the work of STM in responsibility to the Board of Governors and the Government of Saskatchewan and in cooperative federation with the University of Saskatchewan.
