Dear Members,
I am writing to inform you of my support for Bill C-300, an Act respecting the accountability of corporations to their mining, oil and gas in developing countries, which was tabled in the House of Commons by Liberal MP John McKay.
I believe that mining activities in the countries of the Global South must be exercised with respect for human rights and the environment. The communities that this mining affects should have the right to use and manage their natural resources in a way which allows them to benefit from dignified and fair living conditions.
Bill C-300 is based on recommendations made by the multi-stakeholder Advisory Group to the National Roundtables on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). As you know, these multi-stakeholder consultations on CSR in mining, oil and gas operations of Canadian companies overseas were groundbreaking. Their conclusions and recommendations represent the consensus view of civil society, academics and the mining industry.
By adopting this bill, our country could become a leader in corporate social responsibility. I invite all members of the committee to vote in favor of Bill C-300 and suggest its adoption by the House of Commons.
Sincerely yours,
