St. Thomas More College provides up to 14 students with an 8-week international community service-learning experience. Students gain university credit while living with and learning from people throughout the world. In the summer of 2018, students will travel to the Dominican Republic or Ecuador.
Some students will live in communities in the mountains surrounding Bonao, Dominican Republic. Others will be living in towns and villages near Otavalo in the Ecuadorean Andes. They will be living with host families and working in or near the communities they have chosen to call home for the summer.
In the winter term, students will take PSYCH 214.3: Adolescent Development. This course examines how the human brain develops, and how cultural norms, as well as economic and social realities, affect the way in which adolescents grow into adulthood.
In the summer term, students take PSYCH 298.3: Human Development & Culture, a second 3cu class that calls upon the knowledge they gained in their winter term class as they apply it to their immersive service-learning placement in the Dominican Republic or Ecuador.
