St. Thomas More College is federated with the University of Saskatchewan and as part of the agreement between the two institutions, STM shares the University’s library system. All items in the STM library are discoverable through the University’s Library website, and STM students have the same access to books, databases, and electronic resources as USask students. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can find resources for your classes and papers.

==Search the Library==
 
There are many ways you can search the library’s digital and print holdings. This includes special collections, research guides, and course reserves.
 
 
 
It is important to know the difference between types of search tools, of which there are 4: USearch, Library Catalogue, Databases (A to Z list), and E-Journals.

==Course Reserves==
 
[https://library.usask.ca/reserves/index.php Course reserves] are library owned or licensed materials or items belonging to the instructor (books, articles, DVDs, etc.) that have been added to a course in Canvas or Blackboard at the instructors request. Due to COVID-19, course reserves are currently only electronic items (links or documents).
 
 
 
To find reserves for your course click the link for students. You can search by your course code (ENG 111) or by your professor’s last name, first name.
 
If nothing comes up when you search it is possible that the Course Reserve has not been created yet. You can ask your professor, check with library staff, or check back again in a few days.

Another helpful way to find resources for your classes and papers is through research guides. These are subject specific guides that have been created and tailored by a subject librarian.
 
 
 
The content within these individual guides will vary but usually you will be able to find recommendations for books, theses, articles, databases, archives, dictionaries, encyclopedias, images, videos, and websites.
 
  
You will also find the subject librarian assigned to that subject and their contact information so you can reach out to them if you are having trouble.

The library uses an authentication system called EZProxy that uses your NSID and password to identify you as a current student, staff, or faculty member.
 
  
When you search using the library website you are automatically routed through EZpProxy. Connecting from on campus, whether using a campus computer or your own laptop on the USask wireless network, does not require you to authenticate to get access to electronic resources. If you are located off-campus, you will be prompted to log in to access full-text versions of your search results. Beginning your search at the library website is the easiest, and preferred, way to gain full access to all licensed electronic resources.

Library Services

Reference Services

Students, faculty, staff, and members of the public are encouraged to ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk or call 306-966-8916. For help in conducting research or finding journal articles, users are encouraged to consult library staff during office hours (M-F: 8:30 to 4:30).

Circulation Services

Borrowing Policies:

Anyone with a University of Saskatchewan library card may borrow STM Library items. A University Alumni Card can be acquired free of charge from the Alumni Office. Anyone without a University of Saskatchewan library card may acquire a St. Thomas More College Library card free of charge from the library office staff for use at the STM Library only and entitles one to borrow up to five items.

Loan Periods:

General Book Collection: 30 days. Reserve Material: 4-hour in-library use, 24 hours, 72 hours. Bound Periodicals: 30 days. Reference Works / Unbound Periodicals: in-library use only.

Renewals:

Borrowers may renew books through the online catalogue, or at any circulation desk on campus unless the books have been requested by another patron. Items may be renewed twice. Reserve materials and bound periodicals may not be renewed.

Holds:

Holds may be placed only on books that are signed out to another patron. Holds are placed through the online catalogue.

Late, Lost and Damaged Items:

Fines are $2.00 per hour for Reserve material and $2.00 per day for recalled items. Unpaid fines result in a loss of privileges at both STM Library and the University Main Library, as well as notification to the Registrar's Office.

The penalty for lost or damaged materials includes the payment of fees to cover material and processing costs as well as any fines owing.

Computer Access

A Computer Lab is available in the Shannon Library for student and faculty use. It provides access to a wide variety of software, including (but not limited to): Microsoft Office; class software in the sciences, math, social sciences, computer sciences, and languages. A printer and a scanner are also available. Users require a PAWS account.

Photocopier/Scanner

A photocopier/scanner is available in the library and is operable by the use of your NSID or U of S student card. There is a ten-cent fee to photocopy; scanning and emailing is free.

Student Learning Services

Student Learning Services is an invaluable resource to any student at any stage in their university career, but they are especially helpful to new students just entering university to offer support and teach skills that will remain invaluable throughout your studies and career.

In addition to workshops on many topics, they offer Writing Help, Math & Stats Help, Study Skills Help, Academic Skills Development, Learning Communities, and Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), and much more.

Research

The library can help you find citations, learn about copyright, learn how to manage research data, find research resources, find resources at other institutions, and you can even put in a request to have an item purchased.
