A colourful, artistic photo of what seems to be abstract bubbles. An explosion of orange and pink, saturated tones in circular shapes.

“Promontory” by Brandon Fick

Brandon is receiving a B.A. Honours degree in English from USask this fall.  He also has a Writing diploma from St. Peter’s College. “Promontory” is a sensory poem, an archetypal image of horse and rider inspired by a love of Westerns. Brandon has previously been published in in medias res and The Society. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Writing at Usask.

Promontory

A horse and rider on a cliff
peer down at a red valley.
Silky blue rain kisses black hide
as the white-stripe nose steams.
The rider kneels and wipes his hat
on the worn-through knee of his jeans.
Water cleans dirty-blond locks
and a tongue darts out.
Somewhere a golden eagle careens
between the weeping heavens
and the bone dry earth.
