A colourful, artistic photo of what seems to be abstract bubbles. An explosion of orange and pink, saturated tones in circular shapes.

“Amata Bene,” “Saturday,” “Golden Banquet” by Sara Parsons

Sara is a visual artist, poet, and current CMRS and Latin student at USask. Much of her work is inspired by her love of history, relationship with religion and personal experiences with the Western esoteric tradition.

“Amata Bene” is a poem with distinct themes of toxic femininity, largely inspired by the life story of Luisa Casati. “Saturday” is a reflection on the archetype and myth of Saturn and the conflict he represents to the poet. “Golden Banquet” was the result of an uncomfortable dream.

Amata Bene

Didn’t you dream
Of roses and lavender
As a small thing?
What can they offer you?
The hearts that you glean
It’s the Grail that you’re filling
Some ritual chalice
Though not quite the same
A prayer for the ghost
Of Marchesa Casati
During a trance that I had
Face out of body
Venus in detriment
Some carry it to Death
Don’t let the view you are chasing
Bury you in debt

Well loved

Saturday

I work with bone
Heavy is the burden
Of the Daughters of Saturn
We draw with lead
Black sparkling ash
400 is our number

He ate his children
Earthly and caged
Only when I am dreaming
Do I escape his grasp
That is where I found
The Universe

Golden Banquet

We had walked into a golden banquet
Service based on the clocks
Someone claimed to be the Harvest King
One said they were the River’s God

Here I sat with the Lions and the Snakes
How I came to learn
Of the Bulls and of the Stags

The Men continued giving toasts
To each other
The Men continued boasting
To one another
So I took my place and waited
I was waiting for my Mother
