STM mourns loss of the Honorable Thomas Molloy

Students, faculty and staff of St. Thomas More College (STM) extend heartfelt condolences to the Molloy family on the passing of Thomas (Tom) Molloy, July 2.

STM president Carl Still, shared the news with the college noting His Honour's legacy with the college and contributions across the country.

"Tom Molloy embodied the values of the Basilian education he received at STM and served our society with distinction at the very highest levels. He was a leader in our province and our country and a friend to many in our community."

Molloy was well known and much admired in the STM community. An alumnus of STM, Tom also served on the STM Board of Governors. Prior to arriving at STM at the University of Saskatchewan, he studied at St. Paul’s High School in Saskatoon, which like STM, was served by the Basilian Fathers. When he received the STM Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001, Molloy reflected on how well St. Paul’s had prepared him to transition to university studies and how the Basilians had instilled in him a sense of service to others that shaped him for the rest of his life.

In the past four decades, Molloy negotiated numerous agreements and treaty settlements with Indigenous peoples that have impacted our nation. Of great importance, Mr. Molloy held the position of Chief Negotiator for the Government of Canada in negotiations with the Inuit of Nunavut in the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement. This negotiation resulted in the creation of the Territory of Nunavut in 1999.

In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments, Molloy was awarded many distinctions, including Officer of the Order of Canada, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, and an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan. He was named Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan in 2001 and served in that role until 2007. After completing his term, Thomas Molloy was named Chancellor Emeritus of the University.

A recent and great honor was the installation of Thomas Molloy as the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan in 2018. In this role, communities and individuals had opportunitiy to engage firsthand with His Honour, in celebration and in sharing of their concerns - accessing support for initiatives affecting the lives and welfare of the people of Tom's beloved province of Saskatchewan.

The STM community will sincerely miss this inspiring leader and friend.
