Dr. Gerry Farthing tapped to serve as new Associate Dean
Sheds interim title to take on five-year term
Dr. Gerald R. (Gerry) Farthing has been chosen to become the next Associate Dean of St. Thomas More College.
Following an internal search process, his appointment was recommended to Dr. Carl Still, President of STM College, by the Ad Hoc Committee for the Appointment of the Associate Dean. Upon completion of his current year of service as Interim Associate Dean, Dr. Farthing's five-year appointment as Associate Dean will begin on July 1, 2022 and extend until June 30, 2027.
Dr. Farthing received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master’s degrees from the University of Saskatchewan (USask) and completed his PhD at the University of British Columbia. He has taught at STM for over 30 years, during which time he has served several terms as Department Head of Psychology as well as Acting Head of Economics, Acting Head of Sociology, and as a member of numerous STM Faculty Council committees, the Academic Planning Committee, and the STM Board of Governors. He has also served as Director of the Psychology Services Center in the USask Psychology Clinical program and as Chairperson of the Board of Examiners for the Registration of Psychologists in Saskatchewan.
Dr. Farthing's areas of research expertise are in child development, including social and emotional issues. He has also taught graduate courses and mentored students in the clinical program of the USask Department of Psychology and Health Studies. In his practice of professional skills, Dr. Farthing has served numerous times as an expert witness on the best interests of children in Family Court of Queen’s Bench and has written many psychological reports in Court documents pertaining to minors. He has also supervised 13 dissertations and 12 Masters theses of Psychology graduate students, as well as 39 Honours theses of undergraduate students.
The position of Associate Dean reports to the Dean and serves as a member of the senior administration of the College. The Associate Dean provides leadership in the following areas of responsibility: Academic Program and Internal Academic Governance (management and direction of all matters pertaining to undergraduate student life, including overseeing the annual planning of course offerings and STM Teaching committee); Internal Administration; Student Services and the Engaged Learning Program; and External Academic Governance, representing the College on various USask and College of Arts and Science committees.
