Thomas Deis '38 WWII Memorial Prize
The Thomas Deis '38 WWII Memorial Prize is awarded to a St. Thomas More College Student or Newman Centre member who has demonstrated an all-round excellence, leadership, and has enriched the life of STM and Newman. This year's recipient is Emily Zbaraschuk.
Emily Zbaraschuk
Emily Zbaraschuk has been an exceptional leader, mentor, and role model throughout her time at university, and St. Thomas More College has been fortunate to benefit from her dedicated leadership for several years.
This has been especially evident through her leadership and involvement with In Medias Res, the student-led liberal arts journal produced at STM. Emily served the journal as the Layout & Design Editor before accepting the role of Editor-in-Chief, where, for the past two years, she has helped to produce high-quality publications while also fostering a strong sense of community among board members and contributors alike. In addition, she has been actively involved in the STM Student Leadership Council meetings and has been a dedicated participant in initiatives and activities across St. Thomas More College.
Emily’s leadership journey began long before university, and she has been developing these skills for many years. She remains an active member of her church, where she has had the opportunity to plan and lead youth services as well as teach Bible studies. In her role as a “superintendent,” she also leads small group activities and facilitates sessions focused on serving and supporting the wider community.
We at St. Thomas More College have witnessed Emily’s kindness, inclusivity, and dedication to serving others. She has been a strong advocate for building community, welcoming those who may feel excluded, and demonstrating to fellow students the meaningful impact of everyday acts of leadership through inclusion, communication, and empathy.

It has been a privilege to witness your growth and to see you embrace leadership roles within our college community. Thomas Deis '38 Prize in Scholastic Philosophy in Honour of Dr. Basil Markle S.T.D.
The Thomas Deis '38 Prize in Scholastic Philosophy in Honour of Dr. Basil Markle S.T.D. is awarded annually to a distinguished graduating student of St. Thomas More College majoring in Philosophy. This year's recipient is Jarrod Daunheimer.
Jarrod Daunheimer
Jarrod graduated today with a Bachelor of Arts Four-Year in Philosophy (STM Stream) with Great Distinction.
As a philosophy student, Jarrod says the most important thing he learned is that philosophy is not a solitary pursuit but a living conversation across generations. At the heart of his university experience is the remarkable community of students and professors he encountered both in Philosophy and in Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies. One of Jarrod’s most formative experiences on campus was the opportunity he had to study the ethics of St. Thomas Aquinas and Natural Law, alongside medieval history, culture, and language.
Some of Jarrod’s favourite experiences as a student included the capstone seminar “Advanced Problems in Philosophy and Theology” at STM and the Witherspoon Institute’s “Natural Law and Public Affairs” seminar in Princeton.
When asked about the person who had the biggest influence on his studies, Jarrod said: “Dr. John Liptay, who taught me to appreciate the importance of rigorous thinking in the pursuit of the good.”
As a student, Jarrod served as the 2024-25 STMSU Vice President of Operations & Finance, as well as a Newman Executive Member. He is also the recipient of the Christopher Dawson Scholarship, Maureen Haynes Catholic Students Scholarship, Basilian Scholar Award, and two-time recipient of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Cross Renewable Scholarship.
Right Reverend Monsignor Myroslav Kolodey Memorial Academic Prize
The Right Reverend Monsignor Myroslav Kolodey Memorial Academic Prize is given annually to a graduating St. Thomas More College student with the highest overall cumulative average. The Kolodey Prize honours Fr. Kolodey who served with the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada and is a tribute to his vision, dedication, achievement, and love of learning. This year, the prize is awarded to Ario Safaeian.
Ario Safaeian
Ario graduated today with a Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) Honours with High Honours in Biomedical Neuroscience with an incredible cumulative weighted average of 95.97.
Ario has been accepted into the USask Medicine Program and will begin his education to become a physician in the Fall. As a student, he majored in Biomedical Neurosience and was drawn to medicine through a passion for science and its effect on people’s lives, through his own experience in health care and the empathy it inspired in him, and through the valuable leadership and interpersonal skills he has acquired as a volunteer with the Global Gathering Place. For Ario, being a physician is a role that will allow him to serve both his community and society at large.
Asked about the impact STM had on his studies, Ario said: “STM provided me with the opportunity to focus less on the financial aspect of being a student and more on my academics. This was huge for me as it gave me more time to study and focus on my grades. Knowing that my studying would get me more scholarships was a big motivation.”
Ario is also a two-time recipient of the Russ and Sharon Aney Continuing Scholarship Award.
Fr. Henry Carr Award
The Fr. Henry Carr Award is awarded to a student who has shown leadership and contributed to the life of the St. Thomas More College. This year, the prize is awarded to Aidan Twidale.
Aidan Twidale
Aidan graduated today with a Bachelor of Art Honours with High Honours in Sociology and a Certificate in Indigenous Governance Politics. Last year, she also graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Four Year in Psychology with Great Distinction.
Aidan came to the University of Saskatchewan from small-town Saskatchewan. She was drawn to STM because of smaller class sizes and the quality of classes, but the more time she spent in the building, the more welcome she felt at university, and the more she wanted to get involved in the community. And we at STM are so grateful that she did.
When asked about her time at STM, Aidan said: “Some of my most meaningful experiences came from mentoring students and helping build connections between people on campus. My favourite part of STM has always been walking through the building and seeing familiar faces. That sense of connection is something that made STM feel like home throughout my university experience.”
Over the course of her degree, Aidan gave generously to the College and to her fellow students, offering leadership and support in a wide range of capacities. She served as a Peer Mentor for learning communities, as a Peer Health Mentor, and on the St. Thomas More Student’s Union as the Vice President of Events. She contributed to the Student Leadership Council, as well as represented the College and her peers at the United Nations Student Seminar, at the College’s visit to St. Peter’s College in Muenster, and at STM Corporation. Aidan is also the recipient of the 2025-26 Cornelius and Rosallie Woloschuk Scholarship.
