Religious Community in a Digital World
Online learning event collaboration between STM College and Saskatoon Theological Union
This June will see the inaugural Shared Learning Event organized by the Saskatoon Theological Union and St. Thomas More College.
Titled "Religious Community in a Digital World," the online conference runs from June 13-16, and features keynote speakers Deanna Thompson and Jeffrey Mahan, among others.
The Saskatoon Theological Union (STU) is an alliance of three Protestant theological colleges at USask. It is made up of the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad, Lutheran Theological Seminary and St. Andrew's College.
The event will delve into whether the theological world can be a leader in a digital landscape.
“I’d love to see theologians and churches be leaders in having more nuanced conversations about when and how digital technology should be used alongside conversations about what it means to be our best selves when we’re online and gathering virtually," said Deanna Thompson. "The conversation needs to move beyond 'virtual gatherings are second best.' ”
The first keynote event takes place on Monday, June 13 at 2:30 with Jeffrey Mahan. His talk will be Christian Life in Media Cultures.
“In a world that is complexly inter-religious and secular, theological and religious leaders are called to help their specific faith communities reimagine themselves for effective ministry," says Mahan. "They also enter a wider conversation about the nature of the human and our understandings of justice in the face of new digital understanding of the self and of community.”
