Class of 2022 receives special challenge to improve society
STM graduates honoured for achievements at awards ceremony and dinner
By Paul SinkewiczThe ranks of St. Thomas More College alumni grew by more than 180 on Tuesday, June 7, as the members of the Spring 2022 convocation class celebrated their new degrees.
Dr. Carl Still, president of STM College, said the Arts and Sciences degrees earned by those graduates will be invaluable as they continue with their studies or enter the workforce.
“What is the best preparation for work in a constantly changing, and now disrupted society?” he asked. “The people who do the hiring tell us that to prepare for the good jobs of the future you need three things: creativity, emotional intelligence, and the capacity for value judgements.”
“A liberal arts education develops these skills as well, or better, than any other education you can pursue.”
Dr. Still said students who attend STM are challenged to think about justice and inequality as part of their education. He asked the 2022 graduates to commit to the work of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada – a task that requires justice, mercy and humility.
“That may sound like a huge task to ask of anyone, but our society desperately needs educated young people who care about justice and are willing to work for it.”
“If we hope to build a better world than the one we live in now, we need leaders with creativity, emotional intelligence and moral capacity. Simply put, we need you to step up and show our society the way from the present we have, to the future we want.”
Veronica Lucas welcomed the Class of 2022 into the ranks of the STM College alumni on behalf of the STM Newman Alumni Association.
“You have faced challenges that were unprecedented,” she said, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic and the changes it forced on the College and its students. “Be proud of your hard work.”
She invited the graduates to remain lifelong learners, and to use STM College as a safe haven to which they could always return and be welcomed.
During the ceremony Tuesday, four major STM College Awards were presented. As well, the STM graduates with the highest average in each subject were honoured:
Right Reverend Monsignor Myroslav Kolodey Memorial Academic Prize
Awarded annually to a graduating 3rd or 4th year St. Thomas More College Student with the highest overall cumulative average.
Paige Daubenfeld leaves STM after earning a Bachelor of Arts and Science (Honours) with High Honours, Health Studies (Individual, Society & Health).
She has been accepted into University of British Columbia medical school where she will begin her studies in the fall.
“I have had the pleasure of taking many St. Thomas More classes,” said Paige. “I sought out STM classes that fit into my schedule because I enjoyed the smaller class sizes and dedicated professors that are willing to ensure you achieve your academic goals. I also spent majority of my free time studying at STM as it is a truly beautiful and quiet study location with several study rooms, libraries, and food options.”
Paige said the by self-declaring as a STM student, she opened the door to scholarships, networking opportunities with staff and faculty, and a small, welcoming community to make new friends.
“I have loved my time with STM and am thankful for all that that STM has offered me.”
Thomas Deis '38 Prize in Scholastic Philosophy in Honour of Dr. Basil Markle S.T.D.
Awarded annually to a distinguished graduating student of St. Thomas More College majoring in Philosophy.
Jessi Harms recently accepted a position at Nutrien, where she hopes to embark upon a successful career.
While at STM, she earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with High Honours in Philosophy, and a certificate in Ethics, Justice, & Law
She said the best part about her time at the College was the professors.
“In my experience, when professors are passionate about what they do, it makes learning easy and enjoyable — as it ought to be — and I was fortunate enough to have consistently great professors during my time at STM,” said Jessi.
Thomas Deis ‘38 WWII Memorial Prize
Awarded to a St. Thomas More College Student or Newman Centre member who has demonstrated an all-round excellence or leadership, and/or who has enriched notably the life of STM or Newman Centre.
Rachel Kay’s plans for the future involve working with Parks Canada, becoming a National Historic Site tour guide for the summer.
“However, once autumn comes, I plan on staying in Saskatoon to continue to build more connections within the city,” said Rachel. “I want to get involved with youth with mental health or substance abuse problems, and see to a better future for them. My goal is to one day get my Master’s and PhD in psychology, specifically in Music Therapy or Cognitive Psychology.”
Rachel earned a Bachelor of Science Honours, in Psychology during her studies. She takes with her many positive memories of her time at STM.
“I started in STM with the Newman Sounds Glee Club, and fell into the STM way of life. All the staff, professors, and students were always willing to answer any questions or lend a hand when asked. I started spending all my free time in STM, whether it be studying or hanging out with my friends in the lounge.”
Rachel did her honours thesis with one of the STM faculty and became a part of one of STM’s research teams, which then led her to become a teaching and research assistant in the Department of Psychology.
“I decided to join the STMSU in my final year because I really wanted to become even more involved with STM, and wanted to give other students the chances to have what I have experienced with STM,” said Rachel. “When I think about my time at the University of Saskatchewan, STM is one of the first things that come to my mind. STM has a something special about it and I cannot stress my positive experience with them enough.”
Fr. Henry Carr Award
Awarded to a student/students who has/have shown leadership in and/or contributed to the life of the St. Thomas More College.
Ana Cristina Camacho Alarcón graduates with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English.
“Throughout my time in university, I have become interested in community organizations and the non-profit sector,” said Ana Cristina. “In my future career, I hope to build on my experiences as a student journalist and editor, and use my communication skills to tell important stories and amplify voices in my community. This summer after graduation, I will continue working as a research assistant at USask, and as part of the Nuit Blanche contemporary arts festival Board of Directors.”
She credits St. Thomas More College with providing the most engaging courses, professors, and community activities of her time in university.
“I first became interested in the college in my first year, when I took an STM course that was part of the Community Service Learning initiative and benefited greatly from the experience.”
“In the years since, STM has been a place where I have been encouraged to learn through experiences in and outside the classroom, and to meaningfully engage with my community.”
“I have been part of several of STM's student groups, including Newman Sounds, in medias res, and the Student Leadership Council. My time as editor-in-chief at the in medias res literary magazine in particular will always stay with me as a highlight of my university experience.”
Fr. Henry Carr Award

Co-recipient Hannah Tran is likewise highly accomplished in communications, having achieved a Bachelor of Arts with Great Distinction in English, with a Minor in Women's and Gender Studies.
She was the non-fiction editor for in medias res in 2020-2021, and served as editor-in-chief in 2021-2022. While at STM, Hannah did Community Service Learning placements at Sherbrooke Community Centre, Global Gathering Place and with International Women of Saskatoon.
