Father André Poilièvre, the founder of STR8 UP, received an honorary degree from the University of Saskatchewan at its November 8 convocation ceremony for his lifetime of service to the community.

November 22, STM also honoured Fr. Poilievre with a dinner in collaboration with the College’s Service and Justice Project students. Special guests in attendance included students participating in STM’s Service and Justice project(SJP), their coordinator-Tina Zheng, President Carl Still, Dean Tammy Marche, Gertrude Rompré, Fr. Poilièvre, Stan Tui (co-founder of Str8Up) and Erin; Harry and Germaine Lafond, and his Excellency Bishop Mark Hagemoen.

Fr. Poilièvre, was the recipient of the 2015 STM Medal whre he was recognized for his qualities of care, integrity and faith, with significant contributions to community and public life.

Now 87, Poilièvre founded STR8UP in 2002, working with those ready to leave street gangs and the lifestyle. He has only just retired from their Board this past summer – but remains committed to the organization.

Part of the evening included a talk by Fr. Andre, reflecting on his lifelong commitment to serving Indigenous peoples, the STR8UP goals and commitment, and ultimately reminding us that the key to building relationships through honesty and humility. There was also opportunity for follow up questions with the students and attendees.

The evening – while to celebrate Father Poilievre, was a wonderful time for community, and brought much reflection on what many of us still need to learn, along with inspiration to serve – modeling our guest of honour.
