Chelsea Seminars return to STM with special guests

After pandemic interruption, academic research series back with talk on philosophy of music, performance by Elixir Ensemble

By Paul Sinkewicz

Dr. Daniel Regnier reignited the Chelsea Seminars series on Wedneday, Sept. 27 with a lecture on the philosphy of music in the STM Chapel. His short talk was titled Music, Meaning and World.

The Chelsea Seminars began in 2018 as a monthly series of talks given by STM College professors to share research across disciplinary boundaries. The popular event has been dormant since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down live events on campus.

Dr. Regnier, Associate Professor and head of the Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies Department at STM College, ushered in its return in style, inviting the talented Elixir Ensemble to perform his own composition for piano quartet entitled Trees of Northern Waters.

The piece is comprised of three movements, each inspired by memorable summertime experiences in nature. The movements were titled Jasper, Waskesiu, and La Ronge.

Elixir Ensemble features Peter Hedlin, on cello, Kathleen Solose, on piano, and Oxana Ossiptchouk, on violin. For this performance, the group was joined by guest player Sarah ter Velde, on viola.

Plans are in the works for potentially more Chelsea Seminars this year. Judging by the strong attendance, its obvious this first event struck the right note.
