STM President Reappointed for Second Term

St. Thomas More College (STM) Board of Governors is pleased to announce that Dr. Carl N. Still has been reappointed for a second five-year term as president of STM at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) effective May 1, 2024.

The unanimous decision for reappointment follows a review by the Search for the President Committee and their recommendation to the St. Thomas More College Society and Board of Governors.

“The Board is very pleased that Dr. Still has agreed to serve another five-year term as our President,” said Board Chair Dr. Helen Horsman.  “We have strong confidence in his solid leadership and look forward to working with him to continue the excellent legacy of St. Thomas More College.”

After serving as a faculty member and then dean of STM, Still was appointed interim President in 2018 and then named the 12^th President of the College in 2019. In this role he led the creation of a new five-year strategic plan that identifies “authentic Indigenization” as a top priority and established the position of STM Scholar in Indigenous Education to lead this strategic direction. The presidential term also coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring the management of unusual challenges and pivots to successfully maintain and fulfill post-secondary offerings through STM.

Building on work begun while serving as dean, Still oversaw the opening of the Irene and Doug Schmeiser Centre for Faith, Reason, Peace, and Justice and secured major funding to support its programming. He signed the first unified Academic and Financial Partnership Agreement with the University of Saskatchewan in 2020. Still has also represented STM in a renewed partnership with the Saskatoon Theological Union (STU) that now includes shared library leadership, academic conferences, and curricular innovation.

Dr. Still also presently serves as Vice-Chair of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities in Canada (ACCUC), and on the Governance Committee of Universities Canada.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to continue as president of St. Thomas More College for another term,” stated Dr. Still. “Together with the STM community and our valued partners, I will devote my efforts to demonstrating the positive value and impact of a contemporary liberal arts education. For us, that education takes place within an inclusive Catholic identity that cultivates healthy community, the wise use of our resources, and the ongoing pursuit of a renewed relationship with Indigenous peoples.”

St. Thomas More College is Saskatoon’s Catholic liberal arts college, federated and academically integrated with the University of Saskatchewan. Approximately 5,500 students are registered in over 240 STM Arts & Science course offerings in 18 subject areas, as part of their USask degrees.
