STM's Deguire receives IAW Leadership Award

Founded not-for-profit to promote benefits of yoga to Indigenous people

Dawn Deguire has been recognized for her leadership accomplishments

Indigenous students from USask were honoured for their academic achievement, community engagement, leadership, research and resiliency during an online ceremony on March 10, 2022.

The awards were presented by the Aboriginal Students’ Centre and featured previous award winners speaking about the impact their recognition had on their lives and offering congratulations to this year’s recipients.

The Leadership category saw STM’s own Dawn Deguire recognized for her long list of accomplishments.

Deguire, from Muskoday First Nation, is co-founder of the Saskatchewan Indigenous Yoga Association (SIYA), a not-for profit making the healing benefits of yoga accessible to Indigenous people.

In 2018, Deguire received the Saskatoon Community Foundation’s Leadership Award, and she is an alumna of the Leadership Saskatoon program.

In addition to her current study of psychology and sociology at STM, Dawn studied Public Relations at the UVictoria and is a certified Professional Director in Indigenous Board Management through the Johnson-Shoyama School of Public Policy.

Indigenous Achievement Week, held March 7-11, 2022, is an annual University of Saskatchewan event that celebrates the success and contributions of Métis, First Nations and Inuit students, staff, faculty and alumni.
