Scholarships and awards ceremony sees STM hand out $140,000 to its students
Annual recognition event made possible by generous donors, visionary supporters
By Paul SinkewiczMore than $140,000 was distributed in 79 scholarships to deserving STM students on Sunday, Sept. 28 at the College's annual scholarship awards ceremony.
The event saw 67 students, their friends and family members in attendance at the presentation ceremony in the Fr. O'Donnell Auditorium.
Richard Medernach, Manager of Student Experience and Enrolment, handled the hosting duties for the event, with the help of STM professors Dr. Kylee-Anne Hingston and Dr. Allison Smith, who announced the awards and invited recipients up to receive them.
In welcoming the award winners to the event, Dr. Carl Still, President of STM College, noted the event was always one of the true highlights of the academic year for the College.
Your God-given gifts and hard work have brought you to this point and it's a privilege for us to recognize your outstanding talents and play a role in helping you achieve your potential. Whether you're in your first year or close to finishing your degree, it's not too soon to start thinking about the path that you're on," said Dr. Still.
"St. Thomas More College was founded to produce leaders, men and women who would be able to improve the society we live in for themselves and others. The fact that you're here today shows that you are already a leader among your fellow students.”
He also thank the family and friends of the students receiving awards, noting they are walking with the students during this formative period of their lives, and are absolutely crucial to the success they enjoy.
Dr. Still also took the opportunity to speak to the generous donors and supporters of the College.
“We owe a tremendous depth of gratitude to all of them. Every scholarship and award has a story behind it and a person or persons without whose vision and generosity wouldn't exist,” he said.
After the awards were given out, the attendees made their way to the STM Cafeteria for a reception, which gave students a chance to visit with their supporters, and the scholarship donors in attendance.
